The Valley Militia

The valley is much too small to possess a formal military, however it still needs to be protected from wandering monsters from the nearby mountains. To that end, the elders organised a small militia force drawn from volunteers from the community.

The militia is tasked with patrolling outlying areas of the valley and defending the settlement from attack, as well as dealing with petty crime. The militia is probably the closest thing the valley has to a police force or city watch, operated out of a converted fish warehouse in Bella's Landing.

Since the valley is rarely in any real danger, many of the militia volunteers also work as paid security for local noble families.

Note: A prior career in the militia is a likely reason for characters to have the soldier background.
