The word Bolt can describe a number of mundane items, but in the context of the Builders' structures it refers to one of a variety of magical items found in and around Builders' artifacts. They resemble ordinary metal fasteners, with a long cylindrical body and a wider head at one end, but radiate magic of a particular type. This is thought to be indicated by the colour of the individual bolt.
A number of magical devices have been found that require a bolt to power them - for example, a blunt blade that uses the power of a green bolt to extend a razor-sharp cutting field when activated. Devices are shaped so as to fit the type of bolt that activates them; a device that requires, say, Evocation magic will only accept a red bolt.
Bolts are sometimes referred to as "keys".
