This is thought to be indicated by the colour of the individual bolt.
A number of magical devices have been found that require a bolt to power them - for example, a blunt blade that uses the power of a green bolt to extend a razor-sharp cutting field when activated. Devices are shaped so as to fit the type of bolt that activates them; a device that requires, say, Evocation magic will only accept a red bolt.
Bolts are sometimes referred to as "keys".

The Temple of Power is one of the Builders' structures located to the south and west of The Falls of Ardun. It is surrounded by The Quiet Wood.

On The Dwarven Map the Temple is represented by six hexagons in two rows of three.

The Temple was over-run by a large population of huge, venomous spiders when first discovered. The first expedition took action to impede the spiders' access to the surface and subsequent expeditions have seen no further signs of spider activity, but caution is still recommended when visiting the site - particularly at night, when the creatures are most active.

Layout
The remaining buildings of the Temple of Power are:

* a large stone enclosure, now without its metal roof, that may once have held a water reservoir but is now little more than a swamp.
* a small but sturdy stone-built exterior structure, known informally as the "Groundskeeper's Hut" it holds the remains of tools and is a secure place to camp overnight.
* the main building; a three level affair, roughly 200' wide and 150' long, still roofed but with some damage in one corner. The main entrance is a tall archway in the middle of the south wall, whose capstone bearing the glyph shown above has long since fallen to the ground. Six vertical hexagonal pillars - one now damaged and probably either nonfunctional or unsafe for use - travel through all three levels. The ground floor contains little other than the pillars. The first basement level contains the controls for the Temple (see below) and the skeletal remains of a couple of Builders. The second basement level contains a Remote Working Station, two Waldo Statues and a vault door leading to a large, rough-hewn stone passageway leading to a vast underground chamber. This was previously infested with gigantic spiders (up to 50' across) but is also theorised (by Tagariel) to be a sump for the hydro-arcanic generator so may now be full of water and drowned spiders. Either way, the vault door should probably not be opened.

Operation
The first basement level contains the controls for the site. A large lever activates the site; this is thought to open sluices to allow water to flow through mechanisms in the hexagonal pillars. Small valves on numbered pipes leading to the individual pillars can be opened wholly or partially; with a valve open and the lever depressed, the pillar begins to glow red and generate a magical (Evocation) aura. This school of magic deals with the creation and manipulation of energy, and the interaction of the flowing water with the unknown mechanisms within each pillar seems to create and channel magical energy; hence, a hydro-arcanic generator.

This power seems to be remotely transmitted somehow to the other Builders facilities, causing lights to glow and potentially allowing other devices to be used. Activating the Temple of Power is therefore probably a worthwhile precursor to further exploration of Builder sites.

No-one has so far been sufficiently unwise to try and activate the Temple with the valve to the damaged pillar open. The damaged pillar shows a number of wheels and other apparently simple mechanisms, as well as a red Bolt. The other pillars appear to be sealed and have no access for maintenance or inspection.

The Temple of Power is one of the Builders' structures located to the south and west of the Falls of Ardun. It is surrounded by The Quiet Wood.

On The Dwarven Map the Temple is represented by six hexagons in two rows of three.

Layout
The remaining buildings of the Temple of Power are:

* a large stone enclosure, now without its metal roof, that may once have held a water reservoir but is now little more than a swamp
* a small but sturdy stone-built exterior structure, known informally as the "Groundskeeper's Hut" it holds the remains of tools and is a secure place to camp overnight
* the main building; a three level affair, still roofed but with some damage in one corner. Six vertical hexagonal pillars - one now damaged and probably either nonfunctional or unsafe for use - travel through all three levels. The ground floor contains little other than the pillars. The first basement level contains the controls for the Temple (see below) and the skeletal remains of a couple of Builders. The second basement level contains a Remote Working Station, two Waldo Statues and a vault door leading to a large, rough-hewn chamber. This was previously infested with gigantic spiders but is also theorised (by Tagariel) to be a sump for the hydro-arcanic generator so may now be full of water and drowned spiders.

This power seems to be remotely transmitted somehow to the other Builder facilities, causing lights to glow and potentially allowing other devices to be used. Activating the Temple of Power is therefore probably a worthwhile precursor to further exploration of Builder sites.

No-one has so far been sufficiently unwise to try and activate the Temple with the valve to the damaged pillar open.

The Tower of Arcane Wisdom is a school of magic, located on the north bank of the stream roughly equidistant between The Dwarven Forges
and The Feygrove. Its date of founding, history, original purpose and current population are all unclear.

The Tower is a monastery-style complex - as well as the eponymous tower, the site also includes a sprawling maze of classrooms, refectories, dormitories, kitchens, bakeries, fishponds, chapels, baths, apiaries, aviaries, libraries, breweries, studies, butteries, workshops, common rooms, undercrofts, shrines, laundries, laboratories, storerooms, dovecotes and other buildings of less obvious purpose. There is a watermill and at least one forge, and the site is crisscrossed by channels for water diverted from the stream, both open and covered. Fields for livestock and crops surround the site on three sides, dotted by farm cottages.

As well as faculty (variable) and students (confidential) there are an uncertain number of stewards, bursars, assistants and craftspeople coming and going on errands mysterious or mundane. The complex is probably large enough to support two or three times its current population - though it's not obvious why somewhere like the Valley would ever have needed such a facility - so rarely feels crowded. Wizards are the most common class at the school, but there are also sorcerors, warlocks, an occasional bard, and sometimes a cleric or two. There are rarely more than half-a-dozen students in any given class, and classes occur on a complicated and irregular schedule that means neither teacher nor pupils can be relied upon to attend. Much learning is therefore self-directed.

The Tower itself is one of the few buildings to rise above two stories, though nobody seems entirely sure of how many levels it has. It is known to contain the Headmaster's study, the Advanced Spellbook Depository, an observatory, a clock which gains or loses time unpredictably, a sundial, a moondial, various warded casting chambers, and the Faculty Lounge.

Most buildings are constructed of a warm yellow sandstone quarried locally, but there is a considerable variation in architectural style. Much of the campus is run-down and exists in a sort of ramshackle comfortableness until something actually breaks. One exception is the Quadrangle, a large grassy lawn in front of the Tower, shaded by mature trees and bordered by neat gravel paths and bright beds of flowers, which is watched over by the Head Gardener. Students swap rumours of the Head Gardener's murderous tendencies but it's still a popular place to read or socialise.

The Tower tends to be an insular place; largely self-sufficient, students are discouraged from wandering far afield and the Valley as a whole pays the place little attention.
